I know what you’re thinking. You think I have misspelt Aygo, don’t you? I wouldn’t be a stretch, each time I write out Agya, I have to double and triple check I haven’t, in fact, written Aygo. Thankfully this is replacing the Aygo so we can almost forget about that name altogether.


If you know what the Aygo is, then you will know that this is Toyota’s brand new entry-level budget offering. And it could not have come at a better time, considering how cash-strapped most South Africans are right about now. This is a segment that is fiercely competitive and one where value and Rands-per-feature matter most. It is a segment for customers who are first-time buyers, students or empty-nesters. It competes with the not-so-much-loved-by-us Renault Kwid and equally unloved Datsun Go. At the beginning of the year we the Suzuki S-Presso arrived and we were left rather impressed with that little go-getter. So, does the Agyo have what it takes to take on its rivals? I took it for a drive along the coast to find out.


When it comes to the trim level, well, there is only one. But you can choose between a model with an audio system or one without. I find this to be a rather strange offering. The price difference is around R4 000 between the models, so essentially you are paying R4 000 for an (admittedly very simple and outdated) audio system, which I think is overpriced. If there was only one option, with audio, you’d have no idea how much it cost, you’d just know whether or not you could afford the car. Anyway, I digress…

The Agya comes with standard features which include the likes of automatic air conditioning (climate control), a Multi-Information Display (albeit rather devoid of much information), electric windows, and an auxiliary 12-volt socket. It also has a Push Start button, remote central locking, and 14-inch alloy wheels.

If you opt for the audio system you can expect a touchscreen multimedia unit featuring CD, Bluetooth, aux and USB connectivity. But if you want Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, you will have to opt for the touchscreen audio system as a dealer-fitted option.

Safety comes in the form of a driver and front passenger airbag, Anti-Lock Brakes (ABS) equipped with Emergency Brake Force Distribution (EBD), as well as isofix anchorage points on the rear seat.


Space is probably what impressed me the most about the Agya. Especially in the rear. Rear legroom is ample as is head room, perhaps not for the taller of this Cars Uncorked duo, but certainly for me. The boot is as you would expect from a car of this size, pretty small. But it is certainly not the smallest I have encountered.

My only issue is with the lack of storage space, especially upfront. There are two cupholders but no place for your phone and only the tiniest of ledges for your key.


It is powered by a 1.0 litre three-cylinder fuel injected petrol engine producing 49 kW of power and 89 Nm of torque. As is often the case with these small budget cars, it is all kinds of nippy. It is perfect for city driving, but don’t expect much out on the highway. But I did manage to overtake on a rather steep incline, once I had dropped it in to second gear (from fifth), but still. You can opt for a five speed manual gearbox or a four speed self-shifting automatic transmission. I am not sure how the auto feels, but experience tells me it won’t be amazing. I would stick with the manual. Fuel consumption for the manual is claimed at 4.8 l/100 km, and 4.9 l/100 km for the auto.


It has a Toyota badge on the back, so I am going to say, definitely! It is a bit pricier than some of its rivals and doesn’t offer as much standard spec, not to mention all the other goodies the rivals have thrown in, such as free car insurance for a year. If people do their homework, they might find a better deal in one of the competitors, but if you have your heart set on the Agya, I don’t think you will be disappointed.
